Description:
NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk, a 306-bed medical center serving eastern Long Island, is seeking a Data Entry Operator to join the Clinical Labs team. This full-time, Monday to Friday position provides critical support in specimen preparation, data entry, and laboratory operations. The hospital is home to the Knapp Cardiac Care Center, a modern ambulatory surgical pavilion, a Level 2 Trauma Center, and a Primary Stroke Center, along with multiple outpatient sites including wound care, hemodialysis, and specialty offices.
The Data Entry Operator will assist in the accurate collection, processing, and entry of patient specimen information, helping to ensure timely and precise lab results for diagnostic and treatment purposes. This role also serves as a communications resource, coordinating information flow between medical, nursing, and administrative teams.
Job Responsibilities:
- Verify patient specimen identification and test requests.
- Prepare and accession samples for send-out testing to various locations.
- Report critical values to medical staff promptly.
- Sort specimens with proper labeling for designated laboratories.
- Perform data entry and retrieval using automated and manual systems.
- Centrifuge and decant specimens as required.
- Maintain laboratory records according to established protocols.
- Monitor and maintain inventory of laboratory supplies.
- Follow laboratory safety protocols, including PPE usage, to maintain a clean and safe environment.
- Handle accessioning, presort, pickup, and delivery of processed specimens.
- Notify relevant personnel of unacceptable samples and record details in department logs.
- Register specimens for billing and laboratory accession numbers accurately and efficiently.
- Resolve issues with specimen receipt and test requisition orders.
- Monitor and report pertinent patient demographics and test results to appropriate staff.
- Adhere to Quality Assurance policies and OSHA regulations.
- Document specimen receipt issues and maintain accurate records in hospital and lab systems.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School diploma required.
- General office skills (typing, filing, phone handling).
- General computer skills.
- Strong organizational abilities.
- Knowledge of OSHA regulations and standard precautions.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Associate’s Degree in Business or related field.
- 1–2 years of related experience, including coding, billing, registration, or insurance.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Ability to use hospital and laboratory computer systems for registration and accessioning.
