Description:
The South Dakota Department of Social Services (DSS) is seeking a motivated professional to join the team as an Accountant I or II. This is a full-time position located in Pierre, SD, offering competitive pay, career growth opportunities, and excellent state benefits.

As an Accountant within DSS, you will gain valuable government accounting experience while applying GAAP principles, strengthening your analytical skills, and contributing to meaningful public service. Responsibilities include:

  • Assisting with year-end accrual processes and financial closeouts
  • Preparing cash management and financial reports
  • Monitoring expenditures and compiling statistical analysis
  • Reviewing financial documents and processing payments
  • Managing Federal Fund drawdowns
  • Participating in testing and implementation of a new ERP accounting system

Education and Experience:

  • For Accountant I (A1): Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, equivalent coursework, or strong vocational experience in accounting principles
  • For Accountant II (A2): Bachelor’s degree in Accounting plus 1–2 years of progressive experience equivalent to Accountant I

Ideal Candidate Competencies:

  • Strong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Knowledge of financial recordkeeping and reporting processes
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and accounting software
  • Ability to interpret program guidelines and procedures effectively
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work within a team environment
