Description:
Northwestern University’s MED-Cancer Center is seeking a Data Assistant FSM/CC to ensure accurate, timely, and complete management of clinical trial data. The role focuses on implementing data management and quality assurance procedures, providing feedback on systematic data errors, and documenting revisions in codebooks and manuals. This position is responsible for compiling and managing project data, including extraction, entry, processing, accuracy checks, analysis, and evaluation, ensuring all deliverables meet project objectives.

The Data Assistant serves as a resource for new staff on data entry, maintenance, and departmental policies, assists with audits, and partners with internal and external project teams and IT staff to review, analyze, and prepare progress and final reports. Consultation on data management, methodological issues, and analysis may also be provided to project staff.

Specific Responsibilities:

Strategic Planning:

  • Participate in team and departmental meetings to share experiences, learn from other teams, and contribute to problem-solving.

Administration:

  • Manage data receipt, tracking, and follow-ups on assigned projects.
  • Detect trends and report patterns of errors.
  • Contact customers to obtain missing data.
  • Compile and maintain codebooks, data files, and memos for subsequent analysis.
  • Comply with regulations regarding protected data and obtain required training for electronic data capture systems.
  • Provide input on data entry and monitoring policies.
  • Assess protocol compliance and communicate issues to study coordinators and PIs.

Development:

  • Edit, code, and enter data per protocol.
  • Run reports and perform basic data analysis.
  • Determine appropriate data resources for study/project needs.
  • Abstract required patient data from medical records for entry into case report forms.
  • Serve as the main contact for monitors/CROs for data query resolution.

Performance:

  • Review data input for accuracy, addressing skip patterns, coding, and other information.
  • Perform cleaning and formatting of datasets.
  • Follow timelines in SOPs and sponsor contracts for data entry and query resolution.
  • Assist with data reconciliation.

Miscellaneous:

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 2 years of data entry or similar experience.
  • Ability to understand complex pathology data and cancer treatment regimens.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with patients, physicians, nurses, technicians, and co-workers.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in data management in healthcare or oncology clinical trials.
  • Computer literacy including basic software, internet use, and cancer-related databases.
  • Experience with oncology clinical trials and databases such as SAS/Access.
